COMPREHENSIVE HEMATOLOGY SERVICES AVAILABLE AT TRINITAS CANCER CENTER
Convenient Union, NJ office also open for initial consult and follow-up exam
visits
The recent hiring of two hematology (blood disease) specialists brings added
strength to the comprehensive services at the Trinitas Comprehensive Cancer
Center (TCCC). The offices of three highly skilled and compassionate,
board-certified hematology specialists are located in the Trinitas Comprehensive
Cancer Center where hematology patients can benefit from a comprehensive staff,
the latest treatments and technology, and a warm and caring environment that is
more like a hotel than a hospital. To provide even more accessibility for Union
County, hematology patients can also go to the Trinitas satellite office in
Union for initial consult and follow-up exam visits.
Even though most hematological disorders are not cancers, hematology physicians
are usually trained and experienced in treating cancers in addition to blood
disorders. The most commonly treated hematological diseases are leukemia, anemia
and thrombocytopenia.
"Patients benefit from our distinctive situation at the Trinitas Cancer Center,"
says William W. Kessler MD, Division Chief, Oncology and Teaching Director at
Trinitas. "We have a core group of three highly skilled, board certified
physicians who specialize in both oncology and hematology. Although most
hematological disorders are not cancers, they can sometimes progress into
cancer. Our dual specialties help us more effectively monitor our patients'
conditions and catch the cancer early if it happens. We have the latest medical
resources and conveniences for patients, right here at the Cancer Center. Couple
that with our outstanding and compassionate staff and it's an ideal option for
our patients."
The TCCC team of specialists includes Dr. Kessler who is board certified in
internal medicine, hematology and medical oncology. He has also been serving as
the Division Chief of Oncology and Teaching Director at Trinitas Hospital since
1985. Dr. Kessler is a graduate of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine,
Bronx, NY. Vincent E. Salerno, MD, joined the Trinitas Comprehensive Cancer
Center in April 2006. He was previously a partner of Hematology & Oncology
Associates of New Jersey in Union. He is board-certified in medical oncology,
hematology and internal medicine. Dr. Salerno did his fellowship in
hematology-oncology at Saint Vincent's Hospital in New York and has been an
associate professor at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and at New York
Medical College. Gerardo Capo, MD, joined Trinitas in August 2006 after
completing fellowships at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and St.
Vincent's Hospital, both in Manhattan. He has collaborated on research papers on
hematology and patients with HIV. He is board certified in medical oncology,
hematology, and internal medicine. Dr. Capo is also fluent in Spanish, as are
many of the nurses and staff. Many of the educational resources and patient
education materials at the Comprehensive Cancer Center are also available in
Spanish.
"The expansion of the hematological services at the Comprehensive Cancer Center
is just another step toward our continuing goal of providing outstanding care
for our local community and the region," said Gary S. Horan, FACHE, President
and CEO of Trinitas Hospital. "Treatment is provided under the skilled
supervision of medical specialists along with certified and trained nurses,
nutritionists and support services in order to provide accessible, personalized
and compassionate care for people with hematological disorders."
