"I WILL SURVIVE" SETS TONE FOR MAJOR CANCER EVENT
Gloria Gaynor Guest of Honor At Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
Gloria Gaynor, the official spokesperson for Trinitas Comprehensive Cancer
Center (Trinitas CCC) since its inception in 2005, was the Guest of Honor at
the annual "Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure" that was held at Essex County
Branch Brook Park in Newark, New Jersey, on Sunday, May 4.
An estimated 10,000 people came to the event. After the race, Ms. Gaynor
sang her signature song of motivation and hope, "I Will Survive," from the
main stage and then joined Team Trinitas at their booth to autograph music
download gift cards and T-shirts. Over 20 Trinitas staff members
participated in the event, including Dr. Fred Steinbaum, Trinitas CCC
Associate Medical Director who ran in the 5K race and Dr. Clarissa Febles
Henson, Chair of Radiation Oncology, who cheered on participants and met
with survivors and their family members at the Trinitas information booth.
Generous with her time for Trinitas Comprehensive Cancer Center's patients,
Ms. Gaynor shares Trinitas CCC's goal of helping people with cancer live
longer and better lives. Ms. Gaynor has been a spokesperson for Trinitas CCC
since 2005 when she sang her enduring song at the dedication of the Trinitas
Comprehensive Cancer Center. She has since been featured in hospital
publications, newspaper stories, and TV commercials and, on several
occasions, has visited with patients at the cancer center.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of "I Will Survive," and over the past
three decades the song has given support to countless cancer patients and
their families. In addition to motivating cancer patients, Ms. Gaynor is
connected to cancer treatment in another significant way. Her mother died
from cancer and her brother is a cancer survivor.
Trinitas Comprehensive Cancer Center's Executive Director, Richard Emery,
noted that, "Gloria Gaynor's music and passion continue to give hope to our
patients and to cancer patients and survivors everywhere. It is an
inspirational and powerful experience every time she graces us and our
patients with her words of hope and compassion."
Gary S. Horan, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Officer of Trinitas
Hospital, commented, "I admire both Gloria Gaynor's talent to inspire
audiences and her generous humanitarian spirit that inspires people with
cancer with hope for the future."
The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, now entering its 25th anniversary year
nationally, is the largest series of athletic, educational, and fundraising
events in the world with over 100 races nation-wide. The event began with
the promise made between two sisters - Nancy Brinker to her sister, Susan G.
Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36 - to find the cure for
cancer.
